SCREEN PRINTED T-SHIRTS

STUDENT WORK

STUDENT WORK

BRIEF

For these two projects we will be using our artwork we create in Illustrator to screen print onto t-shirts. The first shirt will only use one spot color and has to be related to the topic of the sun. For the second shirt we will be using two spot colors with the freedom to create whatever you want.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Submit design for critique

  • Create a Postscript file from InDesign for the RIP.

  • Print between 5-12 t-shirts with one spot color for the first shirt and two spot colors for the second shirt.

PRELIMINARY DESIGNS, ITTERATIONS, & FEEDBACK

For the preliminary phase of the project, we submitted our designs for critique. Some of the feedback I received from my professor for the sun design was that I might have too many tints when the rainbow is transitioning from darker to lighter and it most likely won't show up as intended in the final print. For my two color shirt, the design was mostly well received and the main critique was just increasing the size of everything.

FINAL WORK & REFLECTION

It was a fantastic experience learning how to screen print. From coating screens, mixing the ink, and setting up the documents to prepare for print, the whole process of taking your ideas in the digital world and making it happen in the real world is always so cool and makes it very special! The right technique and pressure was definitely one of the bigger challenges myself and my classmates faced. Sometimes we would use too much pressure and flood the shirt with ink leaving a cakey texture and our tints would end up disappearing in the process. Getting the right technique that works for you definitely takes some practice but, overall I'm still happy with how my shirts came out.
